Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Amazon Remote Disables Piracy Apps Sideloaded on Fire TV Devices * TorrentFreakEnglish
8·8 months agothe first thing I’d do would be login (cause it’s necessary), enable adb, disconnect the internet, block firmware updates, and restrict dns then reconnect to the internet.
You have to realize maybe a small handful of people that own these devices will do any of that. They’ll just plug in and go. Sure they may know how to side load, but they aren’t taking any other preventative measures as you suggest, nor do they have the know-how to do so.
I’d imagine Amazon initiated these via firmware updates that just about anyone would blindly install. The updates probably included scripts to uninstall any “unauthorized” APKs, disable developer options, restore factory system settings, lock the user profile from modifying the system, etc.

News@lemmy.world•California energy regulator recommends pause on plan to penalize excess oil profits
4·8 months agoI suspect that oil companies have CA over a barrel. Part of what makes fuel in CA so expensive is that CA requires a special blend be sold here, much of which is refined locally. That all said, I suspect that should the state actually impose these fines, the refiners would simply refuse to produce or artificially limit supply, sending prices and CA into a frenzy, the anger of which would be directed at the state. The refiners know this, and therefore the state has limited options to keep the peace.

“So how did your house catch fire?”
“Well, I saw this meme…”
I’d love to see humanity collectively rise up and tell the wealthy and powerful where to stick it, but it’s important to remember that some small group of dickheads have been vying for control and domination of everyone else at some point for pretty much the entire existence of humanity. This is merely just the next iteration of that.
But it’d be fucking rad if we could finally break that cycle.

6·8 months agoThe only thing they give a shit about is sending a message that the privileged class is untouchable and not to be messed with. Look no further than how lax they’re treating the guy that popped those Minnesota congresspeople, the rich are in a different league and must be revered as such.

8·8 months agoThat’s a key thing to remember here. The assholes of the world are still human at the end of the day, and have the same mortality as the rest of us. The only thing they have on any of us individually is access to resources, but as was said, there’s more of us than them, thus why they keep us fighting amongst ourselves.

News@lemmy.world•US Army appoints Palantir, Meta, OpenAI execs as Lt. Colonels
7·8 months agoHow would the companies themselves if no one else in the company is enlisted? The way I read it was that these goons are now officers in the Army, and have command authority over anyone beneath their rank, but that doesn’t apply to civilians (yet).

As much as I’m not a fan of Newsom and his policies or greasy establishment ties, I give him kudos for the way he’s been clapping back at the cock potato.

But to your point on traffic, I’ve been noticing So Cal traffic hasn’t been nearly as bad lately, particularly along the 91. This tracks, and is fucking lame. I’m all for less road congestion, but not like this.

46·8 months agoThat’s from The Truman Show, yeah?
It really does just look like heat dissipation from rooftop heat exchangers, not gasses out of an exhaust. I’m sure that building uses (and wastes) an ungodly amount of power, but I’d imagine it’s grid-tied, and therefore any noxious gases are being generated elsewhere (with the exception of on-site backup generators).
I’m all for telling AI to fuck off, but let’s at least have the facts straight.
