Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Wealth inequality seems like the only outcome in a system where capital gains are taxed less than laborEnglish
1·4 months agoI used to think this would be sufficient as well but as you’ve probably noticed it’s damned near impossible to get our “democratic” governments to even consider something like this since they have been so thoroughly captured by the wealthy elite. You don’t have to call it revolution or socialism if those are scary words or just don’t seem possible but somehow we have to overcome that reality and I don’t see how it can be done without dispossessing these elites of their power so we can dispossess them of their wealth.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Wealth inequality seems like the only outcome in a system where capital gains are taxed less than laborEnglish
19·4 months agoThe problem is that wealth = power and influence in society and this has led to essentially all modern neoliberal ‘democracies’ having their governments captured and controlled by the wealthy elite. So the only way you would be able to implement something like this would be via a revolution replacing capitalism with some form of socialism that would make private wealth a thing of the past and provide a decent standard of living for all.

6·6 months agoInteresting project. Is it actually possible to track workouts using your phone or smartwatch without needing proprietary third-party apps like Strava or Garmin Connect though?
Looks like it now has Docling Content Extraction Support for RAG. Has anyone used Docling much?
Oh and I typically get 16-20 tok/s running a 32b model on Ollama using Open WebUI. Also I have experienced issues with 4-bit quantization for the K/V cache on some models myself so just FYI
It really depends on how you quantize the model and the K/V cache as well. This is a useful calculator. https://smcleod.net/vram-estimator/ I can comfortably fit most 32b models quantized to 4-bit (usually KVM or IQ4XS) on my 3090’s 24 GB of VRAM with a reasonable context size. If you’re going to be needing a much larger context window to input large documents etc then you’d need to go smaller with the model size (14b, 27b etc) or get a multi GPU set up or something with unified memory and a lot of ram (like the Mac Minis others are mentioning).

Piracy@lemmy.ml•I want to be able to stream live sports on my jellyfin serverEnglish
1·10 months agoThis would be a great potential improvement in UX for streaming sports feeds for sure - not having to navigate web pages and start / manage streams manually etc. Does anyone know if this is possible for sites serving these streams like FirstRowSports or StreamEast etc?

Technology@lemmy.world•Perplexity open sources R1 1776, a version of the DeepSeek R1 model that CEO Aravind Srinivas says has been “post-trained to remove the China censorship”.English
246·10 months agoI think we can all agree that modifications to these models which remove censorship and propaganda on behalf of one particular country or party is valuable for the sake of accuracy and impartiality, but reading some of the example responses for the new model I honestly find myself wondering if they haven’t gone a bit further than that by replacing some of the old non-responses and positive portrayals of China and the CPC with a highly critical perspective typified by western governments which are hostile to China (in particular the US). Even the name of the model certainly doesn’t make it sound like neutrality and accuracy is their primary aim here.

1730·10 months agoI used to daily drive Ubuntu some years ago for work/personal use but have been back on Win 10 primarily for the last 4-5 years. I was considering trying to go back due to how much Windows sucks (despite some proprietary software only being available on it) but remembering the trouble I had with some networking/printer drivers and troubleshooting those issues and then seeing this article Is definitely making me reconsider…

News@lemmy.world•Chinese TikTok alternative RedNote could pose greater security risks, experts sayEnglish
3913·11 months agoThe US government’s position on this can be summed up as “massive unaccountable US tech firms having all of your data and manipulating public opinion via their black box algorithms is okay, but Chinese companies doing that is a national security concern”. I call BS. The degree to which China is actually a US adversary is being massively overstated by the US government as they see this as a threat to US geopolitical hegemony and America’s ability to propagandize its own citizens. I have spent some time on RedNote (Xiaohongshu) and all I have seen is friendly cross-cultural exchange and discussion between these supposed ‘adversaries’.

News@lemmy.world•Sanders Pushes Harris to Pursue Agenda That 'Speaks to the Needs of the Working Class'.English
181·1 year agoThis kind of technocratic approach can sound great and it’s always good to have policy and positions formed by those most knowledgeable in the relevant field. The problem is that the “experts” that will likely have her ear will be the ones that are vetted and approved by the power elite, the wealthiest in this country who will largely recommend what is best to protect their privilege, wealth and position.

283·1 year agoAgreed, but it’s not gonna happen. Too far left, two demonized by the right and I don’t think they want two women on the ticket. It’s 2024 and sad to say it will still be hard enough to overcome sexism for many voters just for Harris.

121·1 year agoTBH This might be a good enough idea to merit a whole community of people just posting singular cool screenshots of games they are playing. Could be a cool low-effort visual way to document what folks are into at the moment. Kind of like a visual version of those ‘what are you playing’ weekly threads that used to be everywhere.

331·1 year agoThis is the kind of news that should actually be posted on all of the ‘uplifting news’ communities, instead of ‘teen works 600 hours for minimum wage to help pay for his mother’s dialysis’ or whatever…
Been having fun and happy to see a gameplay balance patch so soon. That said, the technical side of this game is what really needs work and according to everything I’ve been seeing from Digital Foundry and others there’s some serious low hanging fruit that could improve the frame rate and pacing that is still pretty poor on all systems. Hopefully they bring some attention to that side of things soon. Game is certainly playable in the current state in my opinion but would be much more enjoyable if it actually stuck to something close to 60 FPS in most situations on XSX/PS5.

politics @lemmy.world•Polling sets off fresh alarm bells for BidenEnglish
41·2 years agoWhat is the deal with any negative Biden polling news being downvoted into oblivion?

Much of this reads like what the Democrats’ strategy has already been for the last 10 years or so with some additional calls towards a “moderate” “centrism” that has not proven to be as popular as left populist policies with most Americans. And a lot of it seems confused or just wrong. For example, Medicare for All is not an unpopular policy. Last I checked it it was polling at around a 60% approval.
Even if your politics are more centrist, I don’t see how this represents a substantive shift in any way. It’s minor tinkering around the edges or slightly altering messaging. That’s what the moment calls for? That’s the key to success and the way to fight back against an increasingly overt and ascendant strain of fascism in the country? If that’s what the Democratic leadership thinks then one must honestly wonder if the party is institutionally incapable of the change that would need to happen to actually win elections and improve their godawful approval ratings. And based on their donor base, this shouldn’t actually be surprising. The leadership is still utterly captured by and beholden to wealthy interests that would rather jump off a bridge than acknowledge that what Americans want is a party that will fight for meaningful material benefits in their standard of living as this implies meaningfully raising taxes and imposing costs or regulations on their businesses to ensure benefits for regular working class people who are struggling mightily.
