At least in Canada and the USA, most publications are owned by private corporations. Canada’s right is fuelled by Post Media’s papers, which is owned by a MAGA hedge fund. The CBC and some very small independents like Breach Media or The Narwhal are the only ones not owned by private interests.

There are files I have read describing victims as young as 5.

Using tear gas is a war crime banned under the Geneva convention. But states have no qualms using them against civilians. Being maced point-blank is worse.

Most of what’s happening today has been common at the southern US border for years. The difference is that now, people are seeing how migrants are treated closer to home.

That happened in Canada’s federal election. Our Conservative party was acting like Trumpists, so people flocked to the Liberal party, our left-ish parties collapsed, and the Liberals took a big step right.

We’re all in this together; the whole world is feeling it right now. And the community, commonality, and solidarity between people from countries around the world is a great comfort for me, speaking as a Canadian. When shit gets worse, remember that mutual aid is at least as important as competition to human nature - take care of one another.
