politics @lemmy.world•Harris accepts CNN debate invitation for October 23, again challenging Trump to another showdown
261·1 year agoI think the far left (if they’re going to vote) aren’t likely to be pushed away by more moderation from Harris. They’re already far more politically engaged than the vast majority of people. Meanwhile, there are a lot of apolitical people who dislike Trump, but just don’t want to vote and feel like they don’t know enough about Kamala to feel comfortable voting for her (my Catholic Republican mother, for example). I think that group probably has more people in it than the far left does, and more exposure to Kamala’s normalcy relative to Trump is a good thing for swaying them, given the shift in the polls following the last debate. I’ll always be disappointed when the Dems pivot right instead of left, but I think the logic is sound in this case.

Technology@lemmy.world•Is it fair to ask individuals to make significant changes to their lifestyles to combat climate change?"English
13·1 year agoIs it fair? Probably, yeah. But I don’t think it’s an effective way of framing or addressing the problem.
The challenge is always getting enough people to do enough of an action that it makes an impact. It is certainly more effective, in terms of reducing emissions, to target policy interventions at leverage points - like forcing energy companies to adopt renewables by law and banning further fossil fuel extraction.
Personal action can be useful to live in alignment with your values and to provide examples to others for ways to get involved in the climate movement, but we can’t consume our way out of this.
No, I just never feel good after using it
Maybe it’s just me, maybe it’s the algorithms, but I do notice a difference in how I feel after spending time on the Lemmy or Mastodon vs Instagram or LinkedIn

2·1 year agoThat’s all really interesting, i need to learn more. I don’t know tons about Carter, but I do know he put solar panels on the White House in the 70s, which is pretty rad. Of course Reagan took them right off, that fucker

3·1 year agoIf i remember right, he said if he won he would go to places like WV and hold rallies demanding senators help his agenda or he’d back their primary challengers. That’s the kind of guts I’d like to have seen

politics @lemmy.world•Labor union disapproval hits 57-year low
6·1 year agoMy employer is negotiating with one of the unions right now, and they keep sending everyone email updates on the negotiations that very clearly are trying to get those of us that aren’t in a bargaining unit to feel annoyed at the union for asking for more in raises than the rest of us got. It’s having the opposite effect - it’s making us feel like upper management aren’t negotiating in good faith, and making me wish my position was eligible to be in the union
Sometimes I want something bitter. If I want hot and bitter, I’ll drink coffee. If I want cold and bitter, I’ll have an IPA. I also like dark chocolate. Must just be something about bitterness that I enjoy.

I hear that, but I think we need to be phasing out coal as fast as possible. Nuclear for base load and renewables plus storage for the rest is our best path forward to decarbonize ASAP

2·1 year agoWind has come down a lot, just over a longer time. Solar and storage are what have really plummeted recently. https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/levelized-cost-of-energy
One of the big challenges now in the US is streamlining permitting, for renewables and for transmission upgrades and expansions.
I’d be interested to see the video you mention!

Technology@lemmy.world•The world's largest single-capacity floating wind platform has two turbinesEnglish
3·1 year agoThis is true, but investing in research and subsidizing its production is how we drive costs down. We’ve done a really incredible job of getting clean energy costs down from where they were, but there’s no need to slow our efforts down now
Oh yeah… arc flash. That makes sense

memes@lemmy.world•Once again, I am asking for advice
291·1 year agoNo please! Electric substations are necessary to transmit power, and we actually need more of them if we’re going to build the amount of renewables we need.
If you’re looking for parts of the electrical system that I feel less positively about, that would include data centers (especially for AI and crypto mining) and coal-fired power plants.
Of course, industrial sabotage is a crime, and with all the high voltage and current going around, it’s a particularly dangerous one at that. Would not recommend
