ST looming in the background, NXP desperately trying to smash their own kneecaps with a hammer and failing. ESP getting hit with a lightning bolt every time they try to read documentation they printed out but not when its digital…

Cheap. Also, a large part of the tinkering community never moves past soldering or perf board + lack of cheap 2354 boards. 2040 is already good enough for keebs and most projects. 2350 had eratta E9 published (gpio lockup) which killed its initial adoption rate for more advanced projects PicoLogicAnalyzer, protocol emulation, etc.
Poorly shielded inductors in switch mode PSUs/old CRTs for me (Very common in older devices, low current causes the switching frequency to drop into the audible range.)
You can build your own tinnitus inducer with a cheapo 100kHz buck ic, put an air coil inductor on it, and then decrease the current until failure.

… it’s been a journey. TLDR: Wayland is super broken, NVIDIA makes it worse, Ubuntu doesn’t come with the right drivers out of box, UI inconsistency is everywhere (only Mac gets it right, at the cost of everything else) but major feature upgrades in most regular stuff.
I switched to Debian +Plasma X11, which makes most things work out of the box, but KiCAD crashes Plasma and logs you out of you open a large enough file. If I use Wayland, all of the windows open in a giant pile in the center my screen and OrcaSlicer segfaults when opening a webkit embed. Also no 3d views.
NVIDIA breaks all the rendering stuff, so no 3d model previews in your icons :( and the install defaults to unsafe mode on high refresh screens for Kubuntu, which cuts off the top half of your screen. Print previews are broken on Kate (NVIDIA)
Older Unity Engine can’t run controller input natively on linux, so you still play games under proton.
Login screen wallpaper and Wallpaper waking up from sleep and “wallpaper” are three different wallpapers on Debian/Plasma.
Plasma Desktop is not considered an active window so creating a new file and pressing enter doesn’t open it, but rather selects a foreground window, But if no window exists, it will open the file.
Now, the better stuff:
Printer drivers work out of box on basically everything I’ve tested and adding printers is plug and play unlike Windows. Printers on? You’re done!
Separated home and root partitions, I nuked my install 4 times and didn’t need to copy over my data. (Auto partition doesn’t give round numbers to the partitions and this irritates me why 61.73.gb root partitions why not 62???)
Snapshot backups - I no longer care if I accidentally need some older file I deleted, if I ran a backup recently, it’s there. Restic
Updates: I can reinstall and uninstall without rebooting - takes 2 minutes max. (Downloading is the bigger portion of it)
Faster boot times, way better keyboard input support, more customizable, integrated file management zip/rar support (very cool) Files open faster, dark mode everywhere, I can compile C firmware about 6-8 times faster without windows scanning my code every time. Although, is antivirus a thing on Linux?
They fixed rounded corners!!! Firefox still likes to be special and ignore window decorations, not sure what’s up with that.
No Copilot and no “my computer fans suddenly spun up for no reason whatsoever”, although I miss task manager, I have htop now,

Not a sysadmin, just a casual IT.
If it is open, it is going to get hit by scanners, scrapers, everything and the sun, even if it is secure. Generally, 443 for your websites via reverse proxy with an IP whitelist + password is okay. Not special, lets you add subdomains, very convenient.
Now, there isn’t anything special about any given port, but you still need to have some form of access control that you need to set up. If it is an API have some sort of API key in place. Implement 2FA. Try to isolate the service from the machine. Isolate the machine from bare metal. Keep the bare metal machine isolated from your home network. Take up farming. Change the default port and add some form of access alerts/logs. Have some sort of fail2ban service in place because you will be firehosed with scripts and bad traffic.
Maybe some of the stuff I recommend is paranoid overkill, but I don’t know enough to cut corners. Security is a hassle, a breach is a nightmare.

I’m playing Last Spell right now, isometric base defense game. Lots of viable ways to play, but later missions become a slog if you don’t plan out hero builds. A run takes 5-10 hours, but rounds take 20 minutes. Emphasis on crowd control and positioning.
Darkest Dungeon is nice if you want a break from isometric stuff, dungeon crawler, emphasis on team combat and resource management.
Creeper World III if you want to try RTS style, lots of community maps.
Tactical Breach Wizards, Come in through a window, throw everyone else out the window. Silly, but fun.

Agribusiness in shambles after draining the water table (it is still free)

I mean… this is Lemmy. I know there is a weather station near the sheriff’s office that does all the local reporting, and I watched it get built way back when.
Weather Stations are sort of the “Hello World” of embedded systems because they have to run for decades at a time fairly easily. The hard part is probably reverse engineering the communication protocol, but chances are they use LORA and just parse and upload data server side.
Short of DOGE deciding to do fieldwork and physically take down the local weather Stations, it would be feasible to “pirate” (it was already free?) the local weather broadcasts.
No idea about radar though. Any meteorologists ?

That’s what they think too. Unfortunately, they are yet unable to buy immortality. You cannot buy something that does not exist. They cannot pay money to buy knowledge from thin air, or manufacture a product with no lead time, no matter how much money they have.
They can however seclude themselves on a private island and live vicariously through a phone screen in a reality of their own. Until wifi drops, at least.
“the event” is exciting. fresh and new. a real challenge. Afterwards… is boring. sucky. nobody wants to be there. so don’t imagine it. they could head to their bunkers right now, if they wanted. but they won’t. they just keep waiting for “the end” that never comes. The game doesn’t stop, the credits don’t roll.
A billion dollars won’t buy you the exit from the rat race. Try again.

SDs are cheap these days, 128 class 10 for 9$. Just don’t buy them for OS level writes, logging is ok.

I’m gonna be that guy and say most of this misses the mark. The point of stupid catchphrases is to make it extremely obvious why something is wrong in a manner that is personally relatable to the audience, nuance be damned. Not only does this not do that, it implicitly agrees with the original premise. Let’s look at common examples and retorts.
“Black lives matter” -> “All lives matter”
The initial phrase is short punchy and too the point, but the retorts is as well. Instead of trying to address the issue, it reframes the original to give it a meaning that it doesn’t have. (Black lives matter too)->(Only black lives matter). An effective* retort, but not a cache phrase of its own, lest the person be caught looking “liberal”.
“Global warming” -> “Look, a snowball/Why is it so cold?”
This retort does the same thing by instead taking the words literal meaning and misinterpreting it deliberately, rather than engaging with the vast body of science that backs it up (our actions as humans have caused a consistent rise in global temperature averages which has caused ecological disasters and a financial apocalypse). The retort moves the perspective away from the original wide view point, and directs your personal attention to the “snowball/cold” (it’s cold, therefore it is not warm) despite being incredibly stupid, this comes off as smug to their team, so they are going to repeat it. Excellent thought termination.
“Eat bugs” -> “Shrimp is bugs”
Congratulations to all of you that remember the original lemmy raids and psyop posting, so I’ll go through this one for fun. This one stems from a right wing conspiracy theory claiming that due to impending food shortages all regular food will be given to rich elites and we will all be forced to eat bugs. Uhhhhh??? (Food anxiety, antisemitism?, “economic anxiety”/suffering under capitalism, invocation of gross) Shrimp is bugs succinctly acts as a retort because it reframes the issue. Bugs ain’t cheap (you won’t be forced to eat lobster???) Shrimp aren’t gross/unfamiliar (Don’t tell me you’ve never had seafood). Destroying a global cabal in under three words might take some workshopping. (half point for smug because it is stating the obvious)
“Couch-fucker/Weird” -> no retorts yet …
10/10 no notes lmao. Being verifiably false and still accurate gives you the smugness point off of the bat. “Weird” invokes the gross which reduces support for people that wear spray tan makeup. Couch fucker is both distinct and specific enough to to be remembered, succinct in criticizing Vance’s lack of charisma and hot-topic-esqe makeup, and cannot be easily misinterpreted without ceding the entire argument.
“Go woke go broke” -> Go Nazi get shot?
A retort should be:
I’m much more fond of “Follow your leader” although that’s a general insult for people that are going mask off.
Much more fond of something that is inherently dismissive of the point like “go sleepy, baby”. Always mock the fascist.
oh but don’t forget clipping and the fact that you now increased audio variance means the 10¢ tinny speakers at checkout cant power it, so now you have to work around perceptive loudness and normalize to speech frequencies and when you get to the shop to install new firmware you see a granny wearing glasses asking “what does the self checkout menu say?” and now you have a new problem.
