Make the jump to Linux?English2·1 month agoI keep getting called away from my computer in the middle of whatever I’m doing and I don’t want to leave it unlocked while I’m away and I don’t want to have to reopen 4 or 5 programs including a game, if I could shut it down instead of sleeping I would but sadly I can’t
argarath@lemmy.worldto Games@lemmy.world•6* months away now. If you're on 10, do you plan to upgrade? Make the jump to Linux?English2·1 month agoI’ve even taken out the drive that I had Linux installed, windows still has the issue, it started barely happening a year or so ago but recently it’s gotten much much worse and it happens in waves(?) where it’ll not have any issues for several days and then one day it will fail to wake up every time it goes to sleep, except when I’m testing. I recall testing the drive check on both Linux and windows, but both came out clean.
My bf and I have narrowed it down to probably being the power supply (last year there were a bunch of power outages after a historical flood here in southern Brazil) but the ram is also unstable at timings that it used to run perfectly fine, but the ram test came out clean so it’s a big mess of possibilities RN. I’m just waiting for Monday to be able to buy a new power supply and a UPS to test, but even then we’re still unsure if this will truly fix it or if I’ll need to get a new motherboard.

Make the jump to Linux?English5·1 month agoI was running mint, but had to go back to windows because of a hardware bug I’m still trying to fix where my PC will randomly not wake up from sleep and that results in corrupted drives, which windows can fix with it’s automated repair at boot, but Linux has done commands that I need to run and if I fuck it up it would fuck my computer up even more, so until I can fix the hardware bug I’m stuck on windows, but by fuck do I hate it. I prefer Linux so much more over windows, so much more convenient, efficient, personalizable and it actually works in many places where windows simply doesn’t even with a lot of fiddling around in settings and shit

I think that the big thing for the general public is not that Linux will now be easy to use/accessible, it currently is pretty much there with many different distros, it’s that there’s a known face behind it. In the general public Linux is just this weird thing that isn’t really attached to anything besides the super tech savvy, so they think they can’t use it because they aren’t super tech savvy. By making it steam’s Linux, they can go “oh I know steam, they do stuff really well for people like me! This is probably easy enough that I can use!”
Another thing that will help is a centralization of support. With enough people using it questions and bugs will be more common and more accessible as well as answered. Currently for you to find help for your issue you need to look for your specific distro and try to also parse if the answers for other distros would help you with your issue.
You didn’t even watch the video, did you? This was not affecting only those who were a sponsor for honey, they affected EVERYONE who had an affiliate link, from the Mrbeast youtubers to people who actually check their sponsors because honey.
What honey would do is take away any affiliate commission for themselves, not only taking that money but by changing the cookie from others to theirs, so if a person with an affiliate link that did everything right, got a good sponsor with integrity and did a proper video showing the good and bad side of their product would still lose because instead of the sales showing that people came from the good creator, honey would change to their tracking, making the business not want to sponsor the good creator and the good creator wouldn’t even get their commission from the sales they made because honey stole them

This is the fifth person I see misinterpreting what Steve said about doing Linux performance testing, they aren’t going to start doing this soon, they will only start doing it WHEN SteamOS is released for desktops! It was very clear on the video FFS
I’m also really fucking excited for that tho, I recently switched to mint and helldivers 2 actually feels smoother than on windows, it has been such a good experience!! I cannot imagine how much better things will get with more people jumping to Linux and thus game makers actually pay attention to us
