It’s GPLv3-licensed and they have some pretty easy documented steps for self hosting. Their github page is linked in the article.The per-user cost is for a hosted solution. Which isn’t to say they’re not going to pull something shitty in the future.

Does this actually work? I just tried it on a story on The Atlantic website and I just got a print page that looks exactly like the locked paywall page (i.e. not the whole article).

I use the web archives extension for firefox to easily get the archive.is version of pages. Unfortunately, doesn’t work when I’m using a vpn, but otherwise works like a charm.

That may work in some cases, but not all. Because not all paywall pages behave in a way where this is functional. The Atlantic is an example, it produces a partial page if you’re not past the paywall, so ctrl-p doesn’t work. The web archives extension still works though (I use it to easily access archive.is) and the extension is available on mobile firefox as well.

I have also used 12 foot ladder in the past, and it works well. In fact, testing it now, it seems to even work when I’m using Proton VPN. archive.is does not work for me through the vpn, so I may switch back to 12ft.io. 12ft.io just has you append the paywalled url to their url, so it should be easy enough to make a bookmarklet.

Have you looked at netdata? It’s super easy to be up and running quickly.

I’m an able-bodied handcyclist. Not a wheelchair attachment, but a dedicated handcycle. I’ve been riding one for over 20 years now. I alternate riding it and riding a leg-powered bicycle. Cycling and hiking are the only exercises I will religiously stick to. I realized that my upper body was being neglected and gave a handcycle a shot.

They are super fun and a great workout. I prefer my handcycle rides tremendously over my to eg-poweted bicycle rides (but I can’t skip leg day). I highly recommend trying out a handcycle to anybody who thinks they may be interested.

If you’re in the Los Angeles area, and are interested in trying one out, message me. I love introducing folks to handcycles and live down the block from a bike path. I even have a couple for sale that I’d let go at a very reasonable price if anyone wants one. I just don’t want to ship them.

They’ve moved on to specific platforms, not open standards. Ultimately, that’s not a good thing. Like when Twitter effectively replaced RSS for a lot of use cases.

Yeah, but they were testing the waters with this one. The hydra’s going to grow another head eventually. It’ll be interesting to see how/if the media integrity API gets leveraged in the Android Chrome browser. They’re eventually going to attack this problem from a slightly different angle.
