10·5 months agoAid: we have a “housing crisis” Mr. President. What if we limit how many homes an individual can own, vacation homes tend to be vacant 90% of the year and don’t contribute much to local communities.
Drumpf: Well I’m not selling any of my vacation homes. Hear me out, what if we squeeze out the poorest people from their homes and put them on the streets.
Aid: hahaha, oh wait… you’re serious

14·6 months agoWell said. I also grew up in a ‘rightoid’ family and can confirm.
I would also add that they tend correlate wealth as a sign of intelligence and hold wealthy people in the highest esteem.
They also try to emulate wealthy people via conspicuous consumption, creating an outward illusion of wealth and success. I have a family member on section 8 who buys luxury goods to lord their ‘success’ over their friends and neighbors. It’s absolutely mind blowingly insane.
Max Power?

This, I was also a hiring manager in sciencey fields. We also verified education, even with a robust job history. I share the same sentiment and could not embellish on my resume because it’s pretty hard to lie about technical expertise in science and engineering. Also, the labs I’ve worked in have very expensive instruments, not a good idea to ‘wing it’ with those things.

91·10 months agoIt’s possible to still track speed using a video feed instead. You just have to know the distance between two static points within the videos frame. Time naught = passes first static point, time final = passes second static point.
Velocity = distance / time
Although I’m not sure how or if this would impact the battery life of the device.

News@lemmy.world•What California's first-in-the-nation clothing recycling law means for the state
12·1 year agoI believe there are some fallacies in your statement that someone smarter than myself could probably point out.
Just as a thought experiment, let’s look at the following scenario. It is entirely possible that we are already paying for this as consumers. Most municipal services, such as waste management/recycling services, are subsidized by local governments to reduce costs for their residents. In addition, companies that donate clothes to other countries ( countries that really don’t need our clothes ) most likely would be non-profit companies. Their tax exempt status costs us more. Granted, this is all just hypothetical.
My assumption, because I trust my government for the most part, is that someone who has greater knowledge of these topics/costs, has calculated how much it actually costs the taxpayers. It is entirely possible that these textile manufacturers could inadvertently be subsidized by the government (your money).
This hypothesis could probably be further strengthened by examining the markup prices from clothing industry, since quality and price do not seem to be correlated in that industry, at least in my experience.
Expensive brands will probably continue to market to people with more money and budget target/walmart brands will do what they do best, and market to lower income consumers.

83·1 year agoAs a scientist who works with all kinds of things humans ingest, I am very scared of this man and the deregulations he’ll bring. But you know, fuck science and education, cuz ‘Merica.
Side note, how do we reach people who reject science? I always thought education was the path forward, but they seem to be attacking that route too. Are we doomed to live in a world of conspiracy theories and misinformation?
Edit: The ACS is offering a course on “How to Navigate Trust in Science Conversations” I guess I’ll start here. It’s not the quick answer I’m looking for, but I guess it’s a start. I think it’s free for non-ACS members if anyone is interested.
