What I want to know is how on earth you would find it again if you did this. There’s no guarantee that it’ll be in the same spot, right? It can get buried or pushed way downstream or both. I’d believe it if it was like a retention pond or something, but a river?
I don’t think we should try. Many evil people do many evil things and they tend to work together when their goals happen to align. Convenient but false ideas are how fascism and a lot of other bad things perpetuate, so I try to avoid those.

First of all no, school fails miserably at actually teaching anyone to learn effectively, so that’s not why they do that. Second, they could just as effectively teach kids how to learn by teaching them things that are actually useful. I would’ve loved to have classes for note taking and studying, critical thinking, maintenance and repair… instead I’ve had to teach myself all of those things, meanwhile my school was too busy making me read about Victorian era dress styles to teach me any of that. Even math beyond algebra 1 is fairly niche and is probably better taught specifically to the people who need it. I’m in comp sci, I use that math all the time, but my friend getting his master’s in plant breeding probably doesn’t need to be intimately familiar with calculus.
It feels better to tell ourselves that all of the years wasted by school are actually for something but the reality is that school just does kind of a bad job at equipping people with the skills they need, and it needs to be improved dramatically.
I fear Microsoft will simply not reassess their decisions and we’ll be stuck with Apple, who has historically been much worse about user freedom.
In general anything made for businesses. They might be fine with us having stuff that doesn’t work, but businesses still need things that work to produce things that don’t.
Other way around for me. I only ever went on there to see artists and hobbyists and cool people do cool things. Many cool people have gone elsewhere which is nice.
Bit sad that in all this time nothing has changed. People could be better, but they won’t. The powerful cannot rule without the cooperation of others and it seems to be part of some humans’ natures to cooperate.
Not that there’s no point to fight back, things will be worse if we don’t fight, but it sucks knowing humanity isn’t going to permanently change for the better no matter what we do.

First of all, they are not FOSS. I know it seems tangential to the discussion, but it’s important because biases cannot be reliably detected without the starting data. You should also not trust humans to see bias because humans themselves are quite biased and will generally assume that the LLM is behaving correctly if it aligns with their biases, which can be shifted in various ways over time, too.
Second, local LLMs don’t have the benefit of free software where we can modify them freely or make forks if there are problems. Sure, there’s fine tuning, but you don’t get full control that way, and you need access to your own tuning data set. We would really just have the option to switch products, which doesn’t put us much further ahead than using the closed off products available online.
I’m all for adding them to the arsenal of tools, but they are deceptively difficult to use correctly, which makes it so hard for me to be excited about them. I hardly see anyone using these tools for the purposes they are actually good for, and the things they are good for are also deceptively limited.
Finding search terms is the one task I consistently use LLMs for. They did not say that though, they said replacing traditional search with LLMs, that traditional search is about to “go the way of the dinosaur”. I dont trust any local LLM to accurately recall anything it read.
Not to mention that once we gain dependence on LLMs, which is something big tech is trying really hard to achieve right now, it will not be all that difficult for the creators to introduce biases that give us many of the same problems as search engines. Product placement, political censorship, etc. There would not be billions of dollars in investment if they thought they weren’t going to get anything out of it.
It’s not going to change everything. Why would you ever use an LLM for anything information related ever? I can make up wrong answers just as fast as it can.
I really hope that this is a joke and I’m making a fool of myself.
