3·10 months agoYeah, I used to think the same… I dont know much programming (at least not enough to collaborate), but I usually help translating, documenting or answering some forums… Maybe it’s not much but it helps a littlw

3·10 months agoHave you tried collaborating to the project in some way or other? I think we in this capitalist world are frequently used of being given a solution, usually paid, sometimes for free (at least apparently). IMHO the change of paradigm has to do with first aligning with the ethics we wish for our world and humanity (I doubt anybody besides Adobe shareholders could cherish the idea of a world that using its products contributes to), and then putting all of our will and efforts in supporting the initiatives that make sense to our deep inner wishes for this world. How much are we willing to open ourselves to something like a different workflow if it makes sense with our ethics? The thing is that the paradigm perpetuates itself by us having being familiarized with it since we were kids. (Think Windows or Adobe in schools or Universities, although you could certainly bring this example to other spheres of human endeavours). Kids won’t break it… We need adults that, although have been indoctrinated with the old ways, have enough will power to open these new doors and create new realities for the children of the future.

1·11 months agoI think I am near your age. I learned spreadsheets on Lotus 123 on DOS and programming with Microsoft Qbasic.
I have now learned to use libre software, like Qgis, Inkscape,Gimp, etc. It is the way to go, for resilience and for the world we want to leave to our descendants. I thinkfreecasd can be harder, but librecad is pretty similar to classic AutoCAD, if I am not wrong.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Which distro would you install on a celeron 2gb ram laptop for a lay person to use?
1·1 year agoMx linux with fluxbox
Totally. Please keep kids away from screens as long as possible.
For this laptop I recommend mx linux fluxbox edition. You also have a 32 bit version.

Linux@lemmy.ml•"I'll move to Linux if it runs every game I want" just say that you never will move
52·1 year agoBecause of bandwagon effect. The more people use linux, then even more will. And itll get more support from software and hardware developers. And the world will be more free, safe, and not controlled by a big corp.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Which default software do you replace after you install your distro?
8·1 year agoI still haven’t found a web service that really needs a chrome browser or that you cant’ just trick with changing the user agent
This should be done by default
If it is a second hard drive… Probably the win bootloader is on the first still? Check bios boot options
Maybe its destiny telling you you can do it without windows
For grandfathers nad mothers I personally install an inmutable distro. If they come from windows, KDE Plasma will probably be easier for them than gnome. So I would say Fedora Kinoite, but Silverblue Aurora is IMHO even best fitted for the case.

Piracy@lemmy.ml•How can I download spotify songs with premium quality without having a Spotify premiumEnglish
1·2 years agoSongs are not spotify’s. They are songs.you could use torrent or soulseek.

Same for me. If you are interested in ease of use, instagram and x do the job AFAIK. But if you are interested in a resilient decentralized platform (and the future of humanity in a non dystopian world), bluesky is not one (although it pretends to be). So for me its mastodon and pixelfed all the way.
