Checked it with multiple reverse image search engines, and I can’t find it anywhere before 2021. It was posted that time related to the other drive-by meme, I guess someone saw the new meme, and remembered Malcolm had a very similar scene 15 year earlier, searched the episode and made the screenshot.
2005 was before these kind of labeled reaction memes even existed. Know Your Meme has 3 Malcolm memes documented, all of them started to spread more than a decade after they aired:
- The Future Is Now, Old Man 2002 vs 2016
- Once You Start There’s No Going Back 2000 vs 2021
- Wow, I Can’t Find a Flaw In His Logic 2000 vs 2013
So even if this scene was used as a gif before 2021, its usage as a meme should came after the Umbrella Academy version was known

[…] Stephen then cut off the three fingers of the right hand that it had used in life for blessings, next formally invalidating all of Formosus’ acts and ordinations (including his ordination of Stephen VI as bishop of Anagni). The body was finally interred in a graveyard for foreigners, only to be dug up once again, tied to weights, and cast into the Tiber River.
If you already have some spare skin you can at least use it for somethimg. You wouldn’t eat that anyway, and mom will be happy for you remodeled the kitchen!

The 2002 recession was not as global and universal as later ones. The dot com bubble mostly affected tech companies, and the internet was not as common as nowadays. I asked my parents once how they felt that recession, when I first read about it later, I was in school in 2002. They said they didnt even know there was a recession that time, in eastern europe it wasnt noticably worse than the chaos of the 90s

Yes, SimCity 3000 and 4 was very-very good. Sims 1 and 2 were also under EA, and they weren’t a cash grab like 3. Spore was also fun. The last SimCity, in 2012 was shit.
