This is the kind of shit that makes me want to pirate nintendo’s games purely for the principle of the matter.
I have several reasons for not buying nintendo’s games, from their piss-poor customer service, to threatening content creators with litigation, to actually litigating indie competitors, to cease-and-desisting fanmade mods and games, and generally treating their most dedicated fans like shit.
If it were possible to legally buy nintendo games and directly download them to my pc to play on whatever emulator I wanted, even if nintendo offered zero support for it, that might be enough to convince me to be a paying customer again. But no, nintendo has to do shit like this instead. fuck nintendo.
EDIT: I’d like to add on to the part about the cease and desisting of fanmade things, Nintendo likes to do that when they’re planning on announcing their own game that these fan projects would be competition for. Project M was killed shortly before Ultimate’s announcement. AM2R was killed shortly before nintendo’s own Metroid 2 remake was announced. Pokemon Uranium was killed shortly before, well, one of the pokemon games was announced, I couldn’t tell you which one since I stopped caring after gen 3. I’m sure there’s more that I don’t remember off the top of my head.
Well there’s another reason I’m going to wait to emulate the switch 2.
I’m sure this totally wont backfire and screw over legitimate owners due to some totally unforeseen glitch or idiocy on nintendos part.
FTR: this thumbnail is clickbait and there is no such error screen like this à
This title has bad accessibility.
I’d love to see Nintendo try this in Norway! Completely and wholly illegal consumer practice. It’s incredibly hostile and would only work in countries where corporations have stronger rights than humans.
This is pure speculation, the language in the t&c describes what happens now: the console and/or the account gets banned from online gaming
it is always ethical to pirate Nintendo stuff
If it wasn’t for “piracy” (volunteers lovingly preserving and modding their games and consoles and sharing their work for free) most people would’ve left and forgotten about Nintendo years ago. Their products would have been remembered just like those old, abandoned songs you never hear on any streaming service anymore, then sometimes think about and never bother to find because “it’s so X0’s” anyway. Most of these companies owe modders and “pirates” the fact that they’re so happily earning so much in this golden era of remasters and remakes.
please elaborate
Nintendo sucks and deserves it
Avast! Watch an’ learn, me hearties!
If Nintendo has the power to brick your console, then do you truly own it?
This sort of shit needs to be illegal.
It is illegal in the EU. This was announced specifically for the US
The EU is the true land of the free.
[insert always has been meme]
I think US and UK.
Specifically for the US or specifically not for the EU?
Why are they being game nazis?
Because Japan’s copyright law is fascist as fuck. Fair use doesn’t even exist there.
Fair use is a defense in US copyright cases, it’s a precedent not an allowance or law
that will just make me wait until an emulator and roms come out.
fuck nintendo.
Good news: a Switch emulator already exists.
i thought this had to do with the switch 2 but reading more into it, the first could very well be updated to do this too. thats shitty as fuck.
Good thing I still have the exploitable one with hekate installed.
Nintendo will have to visit me personally and pry my switch from my cold, dead hands.
Time to Switch 2 a Steam Deck.
Rofl, owned
Full agree, as someone who owns both. Steam deck is much cooler, opened me up to many games I didnt care to play on PC with a controller. Shredders revenge, lots of side scrollers, etc.
I see what you did there
Well I won’t buy one now.
Is Nintendo mad at us? I know it’s a business, but it’s like they’re trying to top themselves with every announcement.
They’re trying to slow-boil you into having to play exclusively by their rules. In a couple years they’ll want to forbid you from having the console in your home, you’ll only be allowed to use it in official Nintendo-branded Play Rooms located at select locations. They’ll cost $20/hr to use, and you have to buy the console first.
Literally none of you understand why nintendo is doing this
Care to enlighten us?
There is really no benefit to relieving your ignorance
If I leave you in the dark, I am badwrong for not doing free labor for you
If I answer your question, I just get my inbox flooded with people looking to argue for no good reason.
They lost a license on an old all in one game in the late 80s because they did not defend it rigorously enough in court. You won’t be able to find an article about it b/c all legal nintendo case searches get caught on the Palworld and Wii U controller court cases even if you change the date ranges.
I don’t know what the name of the unit was, it was never released outside of Japan. IIRC it was a tank simulator game with the console built into a controller that looked like a little turret on a pivot and used the same tech as eventually went into the nintendo light gun
The reason nintendo so aggressively pursues emulation is that they are scared of losing the rights to things like their bios files.
There is really no benefit to relieving your ignorance
There is, because you’re not enlightening one person, but at least 28 by the looks of it. You could’ve been part of a teaching moment to the equivalent of a classroom full of people.
I just get my inbox flooded with people looking to argue for no good reason.
You get the same or worse by making shit up like blaming everyone for not investing time and energy into every event out there like it’s our job to find out what everyone’s doing in detail. The sheer quantity of events happening by the day is overwhelming. You can help save so much time by giving a quick rundown instead, or better yet, link to a credible source with an explanation.
I am badwrong for not doing free labor for you
It’s not free labor, but technically part of the burden of proof and part of the spirit of cooperation. You are responsible for the basic explanation or the citation of your sources so that you can be understood. Pushing this onto others is skimping out on due labor instead by being an uncivilized gremlin.
Explain why Sony, as another Japanese company that builds consoles, is not doing the same, please.
oh no a japanese video game giant is doing nasty, anti consumer things to maximise profits. Truly terrible and sad that nintendo is forced to be terrible by evil gamers or whatever.
Sicko garners playing their games.
And you dont find it weird that not all companies in japan go bankrupt because they have to literally claw back devices after sale to keep their patents? I know us autists can get stuck on ideas easily but do you see how their behavior is overzealous at best and this explanation being plain apologist bs at worst?
I fucking told you and you didn’t listen. How about you go do your own work instead of constantly demanding free labor from others?
I mean, you do advertise that you’re perpetually angry but youre just rude and disrespectful. Your vague reproaches arent anything to work with, in case you really didnt know that. It like screaming "do your own research’ when certain groups are unhappy with science. Thats not how people function, it is ableist and unbecoming. Please do better.
Japan has very strict IP laws, nintendo lost out on licensing in the past because of this, so they pursue all infringement aggressively so they aren’t judge as not sufficiently defending their ownership.
But it doesn’t really matter to you or the thousands of other people who post this because you don’t really want to be educated and just want to be rewarded for your clever words.
You’re answering the questions, but then you’re also throwing in these odd misanthropic asides. Is this a bit?
I appreciate your insights into Japanese IP law and Nintendo biz lore in this thread.
Damn, you really are angry.
Japanese IP laws are no more strict than other major blocs due to trade agreements. Nintendo has never “lost out on licensing” due to IP laws. Beginning in the 1980s, they have been extremely and aggressively litigious as a matter of company policy. They literally see everything they produce as theirs… you don’t own the things you “buy” from them. You pay them for the enjoyment of using their things. They’re about as hardcore neoliberal as it gets. In other words, they seem evil because they are evil.
At this point, I’m just calling this an excuse.
I mean, fuck Japanese IP laws, but also fuck Nintendo for trying to gaslight us into pretending everything is normal and standard. Nintendo of America is not in fucking Japan. They play by American rules with American audiences, and Americans will bitch about their practices.
You don’t sell a Chevy Nova in Mexico and call it a Nova. Adapt to the region you sell to.

Just another reason to stop buying consoles. Imagine building or buying a pc for your OS to just be like, “No, we think you’re pirating something. We’re going to lock your system and make it entirely unusable. Enjoy your ~$1000 paperweight!”
Or buy a steam deck
If you think either Apple or Microsoft wouldn’t do that,.you’ve likely too young to know about “hackingtosh” computers or too nerdy to have read the windows 11 coverage.
That neither company would do it without a profit motive is a good argument to ban both from running “app stores”.
That’s why linux is the only choice for me now.
Hackintoshes have been around since the 80s and this has never happened.
In 2009-2012 Apple did levy a successful lawsuit against Psystar for doing this in a business environment. But they’ve never enforced bricking a consumer Hackintosh and I expect they never will.
Apple has reportedly sued people trying to figure out the communication protocols and chips on hardware those people own.
Aside from the specific hackintosh problem, apple is no better.
You guys still use Windows and Macs, lol?
Contrary to what Lemmy would like you to believe, some of us actually like using Windows. Is it annoying sometimes? Yes but Linux can also be really annoying and a pain. I’ve wasted days trying to get a GPU to show up properly among other smaller issues for work purposes. I’m not gonna even try to bother with it when I just want to get home and relax.
Convenience is not worth all the spyware and disrespect.
Many of us don’t get a choice when it comes to work computers. I use a lot of software that is impossible to get on Windows or Linux. I despise Macs with a passion, but I’m forced to use them for certain aspects of my work. Because there literally isn’t an analogous program for Windows or Mac.
Same with my desk computer, which is a Windows laptop issued by the company’s IT department. Could I boot Linux on it from a USB drive? Probably. But why would I, when that could easily get me fired as soon as IT sees a random Linux machine trying to connect to their network?
why are you running pirated media on a work computer?
On the same basis as Nintendo, it wouldn’t matter if they are or are not, if their “detection” determines its against terms, then its against terms.
False positives happen all the time.
huh?
The only part that matters is detection.
Whether that detection is accurate or not is irrelevant.
Many of us don’t get a choice when it comes to work computers.
Then just switch to Linux on your personal computer. Seriously, it’s as if you saw that single “gotcha” argument and decided to repeat it with no thought whatsoever
Not at all. There are a lot of Lemmy users who act like using Windows/Mac for anything is a sin. The go-to advice whenever Microsoft progresses the enshittificafion is “lol I haven’t used Windows in [X] years. Just make the switch to Linux already.” And they act like ditching it is the only way to go. But the sad reality is that ditching Windows/Mac isn’t an option for many people who are roped into using it due to corporate policy or entrenched software.
Hell, I still have to use Windows XP fairly regularly for work. It’s an air gapped system that never touches the internet, but it is a program that is written in Flash… And it controls some of the most expensive gear that the company owns. Since Flash isn’t supported on modern OSes, the official vendor solution is to fucking ship a Windows XP machine.
I took down all the lan ports in our cube area connecting a raspberry pi to the network. I left network as static as I set it up and installed it into equipment where it won’t touch the network but the machine can talk to it, but then realized I needed some extra software. So I brought it out to my desk where I had set it up while it was set to dynamic and it caused the whole switch it was connected to to shut down. No one really seemed bothered when I went to get it fixed. Concerningly not bothered in fact.
No, we think you’re pirating something. We’re going to lock your system and make it entirely unusable.
Microsoft would 100% do this with Windows if they had the technical competence, heh.
Apple’s just closing off practical workarounds.
