He may have a point, they wanted a counterbalance… I am hoping Leo’s past comments on this administration continue and he works to better the world in his new hat.

How many of those hats you reckon he has? Do they make a new one for each new pope? Reckon there is like a closet with one of each size that he tries on and then has like three of them made in his size? Like the first appearance is in the demo/loaner model - and asap thereafter his custom one(s) gets made? I wonder who the papal milliner is? Do they also do the Swiss guard uniforms? I had no idea how many logistical questions I had about all this! 🤔

You made me curious so I looked it up. Apparently there’s several things classified as “pope’s hat”.

So the specific one you are asking about is called a mitre, and not just the pope wears them I guess? Abbots, cardinals, bishops, and whomever else do as well, and there are lots of different styles for different groups/sects/whatever. It is thus very difficult to sort out what this article is talking about as someone with zero religious upbringing or education.

Apparently prior to 1927 they weren’t using the mitre at all, and were using a papal tiara, which is frankly quite ugly, so it’s just as well pope Benedict XVI broke tradition and went with the mitre.

In 1963 pope Paul VI was coronated with the tiara, and was the last to be so far.

Also gold and silver count as “white” because the mitre has to be white. So that’s weird af.

There are several styles of papal regalia, so I think it’s, like, a choice? It really doesn’t give a lot of detail on the wiki page about that sort of thing but just based on the number of historical options, popes switching things up, etc. That’s about as much energy as I have to read and report back, so that’s as far as I go.

I’d bet they just tailor a stock one or something for the day 1 thing and then do proper after.

That’s cool buddy, thanks for checking it out. I knew about the mitre and it seems like the popes have the same type of regalia/ornamental discretion as the US President does in many official aesthetic choices. I can’t help but think of the practicality that is always behind any kind of pomp and ceremony like this. There’s always some guy called Marty whose Sister went to school with a guy who calls in a favour to get him a job doing something like holding the pope’s “wee willy winky” on official outings when he has to take a whizz, because the frock and accessories prohibit practical access solo.

The machinery behind the magic, the support staff behind the spectacle… Gladys’s Pips!

Most of the pope-pics I’ve seen from popes-previous were without the pope-hat. That makes me think it’s more of a passive inventory item - full effects just from possession.

Probably just toggles the visual off for normal running around stuff, but the cutscenes show everything due to poor design.

Tomorrow the sun rises because of Trump.

You joke but that’s literally it. Trump, same as any fascist dictator, wants to be worshipped as an all-powerful god-king. Take the Bible, replace every mention of god with Trump and you’ll get how he wants his base to see him.

I’ve said Trump was responsible before.

So if the cardinals had issues with American dominance before, and now they don’t, there’s really only one conclusion we can draw from that…

That may be true for a different reason. The Vatican may have selected Prevost because he’s anti-MAGA, but blocking some of Trump’s bleating by having chosen an American.

I think they still have some reticence, but the man has spent the last like 20 something years out of the US and holds dual citizenship. He’s the antithesis of someone trump would want.

I didn’t mean Trump wanted Leo.

I meant he has so destroyed the international standing of the US that the College of Cardinals don’t see American influence as being an issue any longer.

So Trump was responsible for Pope Leo, just not in the way he wants to be.

Someone pointed out to me it might be a way to try and court back the Catholics in the US. Many of them haven’t always been in sync with the pope in recent years.

The Pope really needs to force the retirement of some of the more reactionary cardinals and archbishops in the US, who openly defied Francis in some cases.

If I break into your house and get arrested, do I get credit for getting the police to arrive?
